Jet "Shine On" review
All you have to do is shine on.Fans will be itching to find out if the Australian band, best known for
that iPod commercial hit "
Are You Gonna Be My Girl", has changed their music direction over the past three years since their 2003 debut "
Get Born". One thing stays the same: their old school influences ranging from the Beatles to AC/DC to Queen. First single "
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" is a toe-tapping catchy delight. Even with Nic's slightly grating falsetto, nothing in the rest of the album can quite match its calibre. "
Bring It All Back" takes a nice slow turn, especially the chorus - beautiful. The edgy rock number "
Hey Kids" pumps up the rock energy, together with "
Stand Up" and "
Come On Come On", calling all kids to take charge of their lives - '
cause you don't need anyone to tell you what to believe. Damn straight.
While "
Kings Horses" - one of my favourites- relives our fond memories of the nursery rhyme, Jet makes it more meaningful than we ever realised ['
All that you built will come tumbling down/Don't try to hold it/You know you can always start over again']. Title track "
Shine On" reminded me of one of those inspirational songs by Oasis ['
When the days all feel the same/Don't feel the cold or wind or rain/Everything will be okay/We will meet again one day'] - compelling and sad at the same time. "
Rip It Up" and "
Skin and Bones" are some great tracks to raise your fists and shout along while you're with a bunch of drunk friends on a road trip. And who's "
Eleanor"? Have they become The Beatles? Uncanny...
With "
All You Have To Do" picking up where "
L'esprit D'escalier" left off, the album ends with the all-important message: '
All you have to do is shine on'. Indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Sure it takes more than one spin to soak up the essence of the songs, but trust me, this album is definitely a huge leap from the last one. Highly recommended.
