WORDUP

"Usually I would pass even reading the music blogs that are all Independent Music!!! But this one was actually good because it did not seem like you had to be a scenester knowing the secret handshake to be allowed to read it. They have a good collection of artists from all over the map which is always what I like to see and they have this funny ad running on there site to bring (+44) to Singapore."

Review: The Ting Tings - Big Night Out live in Singapore
Fort Canning Park, 13 Jan 2009

Considering it's an uphill task to pull off a decent headlining gig when you've only got one 35-minute long album, the Ting Tings have got quite a bit of work cut out for them. So it's a good thing the inaugural Big Night Out felt more like a backyard/garden party; having half a typical crowd size simply makes space for twice the fun. NME magazine's 'most exciting band in the UK' was about to take to the stage as the crowd jostled around, -beer in hand for the adults, lightsticks for the neon kids- waiting expectantly. Out of the smoke, cool cat multi-instrumentalist Jules de Martino and the dainty-looking Katie White appeared, fashioning their charming pop sensibilities and warming up 2,500 bodies to the opening beats of "We Walk". "I only have one thing to ask of you," the striking blonde singer urged. "That is to dance!" And they did.

There's something refreshing about this irrepressible duo, and anyone with a pulse will tell you this: it's impossible not to enjoy the Ting Tings live. The way everyone was digging the music, shaking and bouncing to their first single "Great DJ", "Fruit Machine", the delightfully raucous "Shut Up and Let Me Go" (pretty much the entire album) is self-explanatory of their far-ranging appeal from Nickelodeon to the Top 40s. One of the best moments was Katie's lovely honeyed vocals on the downbeat "Traffic Light". And of course, the ridiculously white-hot number "That's Not My Name", which is clearly sticking around for the next decade.

Sure, the Ting Tings come across as a shouty bunch who love banging stuff, but they are de facto hardcore at what they do best, and they play the hell out of themselves. Not only did they put on an awesome hour-long set, they absolutely killed it; Jules' taping of the waving audience "to say hello to our friends back in the UK" only makes them more endearing. There are but a few redeeming qualities left in the pop universe today, and the Ting Tings are one of them. If there is any rising band we can count on bearing the flaming torches of unapologetically fun music, it would easily be this Manchester pair. That, is pretty much the truth.
